One Book Marshall

Many universities and communities have adopted common reading programs which encourage students and community members to read the same book and engage in discussions and activities related to the book and its themes. At some higher education institutions, a One Book program starts with the first year students who read a particular book and participate in discussions and events focused on issues introduced in the book. In subsequent semesters or terms, other members of the university community as well as the wider community surrounding the institution read the book and participate in book-related events.

One Book offers a shared intellectual experience for first year students and other members of the university community. It provides a way to introduce and promote critical thinking skills. The program creates an opportunity for students to discuss and share their own opinions and listen to the viewpoints of others. One Book underscores Marshall’s mission to further the intellectual, artistic, and cultural life of the community and region.
